2 o’clock eventually rolled around and we decided that we would be fine for the exam, but the caffeine and Adderall coursing through our veins shut down any possible notion of a good night’s sleep. We quickly made the call that this was going to be an all-night study session, so we bought energy drinks and posted up in our pajamas.

Later that night, full of terrible dining hall food, I met up with my girlfriend and went to my dorm’s lounge to study for an exam that we would be taking the next day. It was after watching my 13 th video of a guy with a thick eastern European accent completely gloss over basic concepts that I decided to throw in the towel for the night and go to dinner.

I spent 2 hours watching poorly made videos that left me more confused than when I started.

And it was through Google that I found out that Guitar Pro 7 is relatively new, and not very well documented as of yet. So, I turned to the first place I always turn when I’m confused – Google.

FL STUDIO TRIAL HOW TO

About a week prior I transcribed a fucking Bob Dylan song by hand and I had no idea how to even start writing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on this demonic clusterfuck of a software. I study music for fun – because I’m a masochist – and I was still completely confused by all the symbols on the side. I’m pretty okay at computer-related stuff, especially in music, and I felt like I was looking at the interface to a starship. So, I downloaded it, and was immediately greeted by this: And sure enough, Guitar Pro 7 had a 30-day trial period. I recently came to the conclusion that I wanted to start writing sheet music digitally instead of going through the thoroughly ass-fucking-backwards and annoying process of writing by hand, so I decided to look into Guitar Pro 7, which was allegedly pretty well regarded among musicians. It’s a great little promotion, in my opinion. And without FL Studio, I likely wouldn’t still be making music today.

Without the 30-day period, I wouldn’t have been able to convince my mom to buy me the digital audio workstation FL Studio in 2015 a software that, in this trial period, I learned and made music that was decent enough to show my mom that spending $300 on a gigabyte of ones and zeros would be worth it. It’s pretty brilliant from a marketing perspective users either will understand the program in that period and buy it, or not understand it and buy it so that they can continue learning. However, I am a bit partial of one method that many companies do, and that is the ubiquitous 30-day free trial. And they wonder why so many young creative-types are disillusioned with capitalism. Often, software is ridiculously overpriced, to the point that your options are limited to paying 300 dollars for a bundle of files, pirate it – which music companies especially fight with extreme vigilance, or just suffer without an industry standard. Especially those in the music software industry.
